People keep telling me to get a GTX780 over a GTX770 because it is more "futureproof", I watched a linus tech tips video showing that the only futureproof parts on the pc are the case, the harddrive and a few other things. Is this correct because if I spend £134 extra on a gtx780 for 30% better performance then I will have to cut down on some of the other parts on my build.

Most GPU's aren't future proof, the 780 being one of them But same with the 770, new games are wanting more onboard RAM then anything, so any card with stupid amounts of RAM like 3-4gb will be more future proof then cards with 1-2gb. That's pretty much the only way they can be future proof, as well as being compatible with Mantle and G-Sync will be nice to have in the future. Hope this helps!

Is there any way to allocate external ram cards to the GPU?

That would be cool, but as of now, no such consumer grade software/hardware gives us that option, maybe in the future though. Be sure to select a best solution to help people with similar problems by the way. :)

What about getting either SLI with another gtx770 to make 4gb of on board memory when the better GPU's get cheeper

From what I've heard, SLI and X-Fire don't double the RAM :(

Do the 1gb cards still run newer games? If so i'll be fine with a 2gb card until I get a proper job

A 2gb card will be fine with modern games.
