How do you set the maximum temperature of AMD FX 8320 and XFX DD 7870?

Hello,

My motherboard is Asrock 970 extreme 3 R2.0. I would like to set the max temp. for the fx at 55c and for the 7870 at 65c.

Please tell me how to set these temperatures as I am new with AMD.

Thank you!

Solution
You don't set the max temp, the cooling solution does. Those are also significantly lower than they need to be for temps. The FX can do 65C, and the 7870 you shouldn't be concerned unless you start breaking 90C. Your motherboard and GPU will take care of things themselves if they think they are getting above safe temperatures often by either throttling to get stuff under control or by cutting power to prevent damage.

You can use stuff like MSI afterburner and core temp to modify your fan speed profiles to make them more agressive and keep the temps lower but this also has the trade off that your system will be louder than it needs to be at low temperatures.

Yes, I want to start litecoin mining and I am paranoid that it will degrade my parts so I want to run them at very low temps. Plus the PC will be on overnight. Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks again.

You aren't going to degrade modern computer parts, most of them have expected lifespans >5 years, CPUs have very little that will go wrong with them unless you overvolt them or get them to excessively high temperatures. The first thing to give out on GPUs is usually the fan, but that still comes with a long lifetime on it, there are many systems out there that run 24/7/365 at high load without issue, parts are intended to be able to handle that.

When you start mining just let it run for a while and check on it while your temperatures stabilize, after its been running for an hour your temps should have reached their max. If they are higher than you would like you can look into undervolting your CPU/GPU or look into better cooling solutions for each. Honestly, for the AMD CPU I'd look into a better CPU fan if its going to be running underload because the stock one is pretty whiney when it kicks up to speed.
