Wireless Adapter not functioning correctly.

I have a Compaq Presario CQ-57 laptop, just over 2 years old, 4GB RAM, 750GB HDD, Intel i3 processor, and the wireless adapter is frankly baffling.

Sometimes when I'm using the internet it just decides to disconnect, and the wireless button light will go from white to orange, and there will be a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark over the wireless symbol in the icon tray. Standard stuff, can be fixed by running the troubleshooter.

However, occasionally, more so since I finally updated the BIOS a few days ago, when I start up it is just a symbol for a wired connection with a red cross, and the wireless light will be orange. It takes a few force restarts (eg not using Windows to restart but rather holding the power button and then turning it back on) to get it to work properly, and the troubleshooter just tells me to run an ethernet connection.

The force restarts can't be good for my PC at all, but this is a real issue because I need the internet for a lot of my school work and it seems like the only thing that works. I've tried updating the drivers to no avail. Can anybody recommend anything? I'm considering getting a USB wireless adapter to see if it will work that way.
