I currently have an AMD Radeon HD 5770 and a HD 7770. If i do crossfire would the 5770 or the 7770 give me better performance? I am running 3 monitors in eyefinity mode and i and have a motherboard two PCIe 2.0 x16 and it says it supports crossfire.
It's better to just buy a single GPU. 2 cards would consume a lot more power and significantly increase temperatures. Furthermore, not all games are compatible with it.
Bad news, I'm afraid. You can't Crossfire those cards. For example HD 5770 can be crossfired with a HD 5770 or a HD 5750, that's it.

I wasn't going to crossfire the 5770 and 7770 together. I was thinking because to buy one of these cards the then buy a higher end one if i crossfire two 5770 or two 7770 i would better performance then what i have now without spending a lot of money. i am not worried about power consumption or temperature I have my computer beside my window and it stays around 15 degrees.

You would need a strong PSU and a Good Motherboard to do so. For intel , the Z77 / 787 chipset would be ideal. And for AMD , the 990FX chipset would be great
