Overheating problem whilst gaming?

Hey guys, thought you could help me out here.
I've had my laptop for just under 3 years now and there's always been the problem with heat whilst gaming. I only play WoW and older games on this so i don't expect to play anything like Skyrim obviously, but i've become quite worried with temperatures and stuff.
I have a Zalman cooling pad, i've tried Throttlestop to keep the heat down a bit, and reduced my max processor state down to 50% (yes, 50%), and i clean the laptop out every month or so. The temperatures normally max around 75 degrees, but sometimes, especially around certain places in WoW, they go up to around 80.
I have an Intel Core i3-2310 and the Tj Max is 85 degrees as far as i'm aware. (correct me if i'm wrong) so obviously i'm quite worried.
I haven't actually experienced any other problems with my laptop, no slowing down or random shut downs or anything. Plus, even when it's near 80 degrees, the only part of my laptop that is hot is the exhaust(?) (the part that blows out the heat) on the side of the laptop.
So, is this just the normal temperature for my laptop? Or is there anything else i can do?
I would really appreciate it if someone could give me advice on this matter, as i've looked everywhere and all i've found is "clean out your laptop" and "buy a cooling pad":)

I've got an Asus G-750JW and when I game with it, it gets damn hot.

Obviously cooler is better but if it's always ran like this since you've gotten it and there's no dip in performance then I wouldn't worry about it.

The desktop i7's regularly hit the 70's and 80's without good coolers so, it doesn't surprise me that yours and mine get so hot.

Thanks, i've heard that the Intel cpus, even the i3's, are quite sturdy, but i was still kinda worried considering the Tj Max readings and i didn't want to have my laptop spontaneously combust :p

Haha, no worries. If you aren't doing anything to it custom other than using it, I wouldn't worry about it. IF you are still worried and under warranty, have a chat with the mfg.

I don't think i'm still under warranty unfortunately, so i guess i'll just have to deal with it until i can afford to buy a desktop:) strangely it's been a lot less laggy lately, so maybe that's why it's raising the temperatures more?

The CPU can run quite hot if you don't have VSYNC enabled as well though it also depends on your GPU (graphics) chip.

Here's an example of how to run cooler:

1) Run FRAPS and the GAME
2) Turn VSYNC OFF (for Skyrim, force in the Video Control Panel)

3) Tweak settings until you are averaging above the target refresh (i.e. 40FPS if synching to 30FPS, or 75FPS if synching to 60FPS).

4) Turn VSYNC back on.

You should now be capping slightly which can make a huge difference in fan noise in a laptop. The difference between 90% usage and 100% usage (CPU or GPU) makes a big difference.
