Copy whole windows install onto a new disk?

Hi guys.

I had two old HDDs in my system (about 5-6 years old) and just replaced the one I use for saving backups of stuff with a new 3 TB one because it was acting funny and getting old. Lo and behold as soon as I did that my main drive (which is slightly newer) started to get an error saying my hard disk is experiencing errors and I should back up my drive.

Unfortunately I have a LOT of stuff on my system that is painful to install and customize correctly because I use it for game development. So I have direct SDK + compiler, OGRE, and even worse Maya (which is just now properly customized from the LAST time I had to reinstall windows).

Is there any way on earth to get everything over to the other disk without screwing everything up? I was thinking perhaps to install windows vista on there, then to copy over the registry and other files (though I am not sure everything that will be invovled, since it keeps changing with every windows version). Unfortunately I don't have the luxury of time OR money, so I can't spend any money at all to get any extra software. I also want to be ABSOLUTELY SURE I do not lose any of the data I have already as it would be absolutely life ruining disaster.

So is there any guide out there to help accomplish all this?

Too bad the drive failed before you could clone it. You could try making a new installation and copying in the Registry but I doubt it would keep all your programmes. You're looking for the folder c:\windows\system32\config so find that in your copy and overwrite the same folder in the new installation.

Then do the same with c:\program files and c:\program data which is a hidden folder so open everything up first from Tools>Folder>Options>View> tick Show hidden and untick Hide protected.

I wish I could assure you any of this will work and it may even confuse the new system to the point of shutting it down completely. In future, it'sa dviseable to clone every so often because hard disk failure is never far away. I use Acronis...

Damn, that drive is toast now. I had to get a new one. However I copied all the contents of the drive to a backup disk first. Is there at least some way to get the old registry over now from that? Might be tricky since it would now be copying to a working disk.
