I am going to create a live bootable USB drive with my external HDD for a Linux OS. I am very tired of putting up with Windows, the direction they're going doesn't look all too well and since I'm using WinXP SP3 they won't give support for it anymore later on this year.

I am wondering about Linux Mint and Ubuntu. I don't completely understand the differences with the various options that Linux offers and I won't pretend I do. I enjoy playing games, and I'm going to be getting a new CPU/GPU both AMD, I'm wondering if I will have problems with installing new drivers, or just general problems at all.

If someone wouldn't mind recommending the best and most basic option, which would be suitable for playing video games and watching videos on the internet, I'll let you have some chocolate pie mixed with a little gingerbread cake. ;)

Get Mint. It is based on Ubuntu, but the UI is much more Windows-like. Since you are changing from windows to linux, Mint would be a good decision.

Just be aware that the selection of games that you can play will be much reduced compared to a Windows machine. It all depends upon which games you want to play.

Basically I would only be able to play triple-A titled games? I will test it and see, but thank you for your reply

You can install a program called "wine" once you install Linux. It will let you run Windows games on Linux.
