Is 3gb of Vram overkill for 1080p gaming on a single monitor, or will 2gb suffice, because I am planning to get the r9 280x, but I might get a gtx 760 instead because it is cheaper

Either one will do. But the 280x is more powerful than the 760.

2GB is enough for 1080p. Why not consider a 770?

How long will 2gb be enough? because games like BF4 reccomend 3gb of vram. I know the 280x is more powerful then the 760 but its really stretching my budget if I get the 280x, same thing with the 770. Also would 2gb be enough for 1440p? or would 3gb be better?

because the 280x is better 384 bit bus width and 3GB buffer

That doesn't automatically mean it's better. The 770 usually out performs the 280x
