Recently I Just got a GTX 780 for my gaming needs. However i'd really like to upgrade my CPU, which is a i7 2600 (non K model), to a 4770k to eliminate any and all possible instances of bottlenecking. With my current CPU i'm noticing that it's holding my 780 back in multiplayer games according to usage graphs. And as i Unfortunately have both a locked CPU and B75 mobo which doesn't allow overclocking, i can't try to give it a boost. Which is why i'm looking to upgrade. Now it would seem as if i have all the money for the upgrade it would be all fine and dandy right? well here's my dilemma. Back when I originally built my current PC i used a OEM copy of windows 7 (bought on Newegg). And I think, but not i'm entirely sure, that OEM copies are locked to the BIOS, meaning that if upgrade my motherboard i would need to repurchase a windows product key right? (or at least contact microsoft to reactivate my product key if i can)

What I would like to know is if my WIN7 is actually tied to my mobo, or if thats just a manufacturer thing. And if it is tied, could i just contact microsoft about getting it reactivated. Or i'm i just going to have to bite the bullet and repurchase Windows 7, or finally move my desktop onto Windows 8 (I have Windows 8.1 on my Asus G750JW laptop, and have no problem using it if it ultimately comes to this)

For more detailed specs of what i have going on

Current Mobo= Asus P8B75-V LGA 1155

if any of you have a idea as to what of those 2 motherboards to get, go ahead and give me a tip, but otherwise i only posted those because i wonder if the fact im on ASUS now, and plan on staying with them if it would effect he outcome of "Do i have to buy another copy of windows or not.

OEM copies of Windows are tied to the first computer you install it on. If you had bought a retail, boxed copy of Windows, all you would have needed to do was re-install it after changing the motherboard.

As it is, you have to buy a new copy of Windows, or at least a new Product Key & Licence for your existing OEM disc.
