Hey guys and gals. So I just got an AVR to work with my 5.1 system, but I'm having difficulty getting all of the inputs and outputs setup with my computer. Real quick, here are the relevant components:

AVR: Pioneer VSX-822-K
MOBO: Gigabyte Z87N-WIFI
Graphics: GeForce GTX-760
OS: Windows 8

So, I've got a dual-monitor setup and what I've been doing for the past few weeks is I have one monitor directly connected from the video card. The other is connected to the receiver from the GTX through an HDMI connection and then from the receiver output to the monitor. This was working... sort-of. I wasn't able to get 5.1 (could only get stereo). Furthermore, last week my system stopped recognizing the receiver, even though nothing about the setup had changed! I updated my drivers and it was working again for a short time, but the same problem cropped up again this evening :( . So, I'm looking for suggestions on how to optimize my configuration. After doing some research, it seems like it might be best to run both monitors out of the GTX and then have the motherboard handle audio and output to the receiver, but I'm not quite sure how to do that. Is this possible?

Any suggestions or recommendations would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Well, What do you want to happen with this setup? Only sound or do you want things displaying on the amp...ect...ect. Just use the nice green output on the motherboard (audio output and usually 5-6 of them) and get a cable with mini jack to RCA for the front speakers. You'll need to plug all these different outputs into one device to then plug that one device into your red and white Auxiliary input in your amp. For rear surround there should be a black audio output for rear speakers, plug that the device which will be plugged into your amp in the auxiliary input. For the sub/centre speakers there should be a nice orange output on the motherboard in the audio output section which you plug that into the device in which goes into the back of the amp....The device you'll need will have to have 3 auxiliary inputs and one output which goes to the amp.

Thanks for the reply! I think I may not have been clear enough.. Basically, I have all of my speakers connected to the receiver (they aren't computer speakers so they don't have the connections you mentioned. It's a traditional home audio setup that I'd like to play sound from my computer on). My goal is to have sound output from the motherboard to the receiver which will then drive the speakers. I don't care about having information displayed on the receiver itself, my computer will be the 'control unit', so to speak. Additionally, I want my displays to be directly run through my video card, so that if the receiver is off I can still use both (I couldn't do this in my setup before)

Ok, I think I have a solution for you. Just need some clarification, Do you want surround 5.1? If so how are the speakers arranged? 3 front 2 back...ect.? And how many auxiliary inputs do you have at the back of the receiver or any other audio inputs? I have done the same thing you are doing but with 6.1, 4 front 2 rear and one subwoofer, connected to a yamaha amp.

hang on, please explain on this displays directly through your video card. You have multiple displays I am assuming and use both what? I am a little confused but I'll get there
