I recently had the beeping problem on start up and, having right arm in plaster, couldn't do repair myself and took PC to shop where the man said it was dead ram as I suspected, replaced chip, and all was well.
Thing is this is a Dell Inspiron 530 with a MSI 2A9C board which the specs say is limited to 4GB ram but the man replaced a 1GB ram chip with a 2GB and now the PC boasts 5GB ram on board and my arm is now out of plaster and I can do upgrades so..
Does anyone know a quick way of finding out exactly how much ram the PC will take without buying and installing ram until it won't take any more ?

Got to Control Panel - system.
It will show how much ram is installed and how much us usable.

But if it doesn't look like it is working, or it bothers you, then just use the one, new, 4GB module.
If you go to support.dell.com and type your chassis number in, you can pull up the manuals for your machine and it will indicate exactly how much RAM you can put is which slots.
