I can't decide on what to get, I currently have a 1980x1020 resolution monitor and I keep seeing that a gtx 780 would be overkill, but future proof for my resolution. I also keep seeing that a gtx 770 4gb performs VERY similar to the 780 at my res. (I have no plans on getting multiple monitors). The only games I really play are skyrim (which I plan to heavily mod) and World of Warcraft. I just can't decide if its worth the extra 100-200 dollars for the gtx 780..depending on how big the gap is between them.

Just go for the 770. I would recommend only 2 GB, but if you have the money, and plan to mod heavily it will be worth while. The 780 has too much raw power to be used on a single monitor any time soon.
If you have the money get a 780, if you dont want to blow so much cash, get a 770 4gb.

I would get the 780
3GB is still a lot of a single monitor

I remember back in the day when 1GB of vram was the standard hahah.

the 2gb and 4gb version of the 770 perform the same at 1080p. and a 780 is that much better than both of them. If you plan to go dual monitor or more in the future, then it'd be smart to get a 4gb 770 now then SLI it for multimonitor. If you plan to just stick to 1080p then go with the 780. A 770 card by itself isn't powerful enough to push 4gb of VRAM, the 4gb cards are meant to be SLI'd for high res multi monitor set ups.

4GB 770 isn't worth it, theres no difference unless you are SLIing them and are going to go multi monitor, in which case 4GB would be better. By itself, a 770 running a game at settings high enough to use more than 2GB of VRAM would produce an unplayable framerate. Either get a 2GB 770 or 780.

At 1080p, you probably wont see any difference in framerate between the two, the 780 is really intended for 1440p and up.

Only 12% for quite a large price difference.
