Ok so I was playing a game last night and my rig crashed, or so I thought. Apparently the PSU was dead, (did the paperclip test), ok..... So I go and pick up a corsair ax860i, which says it's operational, I hook it all up, press the power button and HISS, BURN, SMOKE.......but only coming from the 6 pin CPU Connector. Now the PSU doesn't show any lights during self test. Is my motherboard or CPU killing my PSUs? Anyway to test the CPU without a PSU?

There would have to be a dead short between the +12V and chassis ground on the MB to fry the PSU. Even then I would expect a high quality PSU to shut down before failing. Did you give the PSU time to cool down in case it resets itself? But yes, it sounds like that was the case.

Alright I had it all wrong... Both PSUs work fine, $229 later.....motherboard is fried, (and hopefully not my CPU), apparently one of my "military class" capacitors blew, when I was playing, and then me trying to force more power through it started the fire. I am not a smart man. Do you think the CPU was fried? No physical damage, but I guess that doesn't mean much. I had actually order a gigabyte 990fx -ud3 the day before for over clocking reasons. But ya any thoughts on the CPU?
