I've read a couple other threads saying that the R9 290 at its MSRP of $400 is amazing. However, the prices don't seem to be coming down since they went up. For that reason, I want to know what the current value of a R9 290 (at $550) is compared to a GTX 770.

I would like to know: is an R9 290 worth the extra $200 for approx. 25% more performance?

I planned to purchase the R9 290 for the extra "future-proofing" (I game and work in 1080p for which the 770 is sufficient) as I plan to upgrade at some point. Would it be more wise to get a 770 now and then upgrade (to a newer gen GPU) down the line when 4k becomes cheaper?

Thanks in advance for the answers.

It is undoubtedly that the R9 290 is faster than the GTX 770. The 770 is something like between the R9 280X and the R9 290. But We usually buy something which is balanced to our own specifications. The first would be the budget, the second would be playing higher than 1080p (even in the future times), your PSU and other things that you might know better. you can see the differences of the two cards here R9 290 vs Gtx 770 (both reference) , i think there are about 20 reasons to choose The r9 290.

I personally had to make this decision about a week ago, and i thought i would never go rather than 1080p, and i liked the games which was optimized for Nvidia like Ubisoft, so that's why I chose the GTX 770. I got the Inno3D GTX 770...

I got the Inno3D GTX 770 ICHILL Herculez 3000, which is the strongest among the 770s I suppose, and i am optimally happy with it!

two suggestions:
1: Get GTX 770 if you are not planning on rather than 1080p for now and you could enjoy the G-sync Monitors, Shadow Play, PhysX, Cuda, GPU BOOST, Geforce experience etc., and when you thought you are going more than 1080p, you could make an SLI and it would be greater than the r9 290.
2: Get the R9 290 if you are in budget of it, like that mantle thingy, have the right PSU and other qualifications. But i am really not sure the 200$ worth it over the GTX 770 or not!

hope this helps!

EDIT: I forgot to say that for now, there is really no GPU that could run 4Ks with higher than 30-50 FPS unless the GTX 780 TI which is better than others for the price.
