So I was installing a GPU and stupidly forgot to unplug the power supply. I heard a pop/crackle when the GPU touched the Mobo/case and when I turned on the computer, I hear loud white noise and crackling from my speakers every time audio plays. After a few restarts, audio has stopped working altogether. [Same symptoms with my front headphone jack]

I'm a noob when it comes to building computers, but my guess is that there is some kind of static build up that is interfering with the audio/or has damaged the audio ports on my mobo? What do you guys think?

Thanks in advance!

You should consider yourself lucky if that is all that is bad! Simple audio cards start at $10. You should check everything carefully. You might want to turn everything off, unplug the PS, remove the battery, do a CMOS clear, and leave it off for at least an hour. Then re-install and re-flash the BIOS.

Not exactly sure what you mean by this, but my computer monitor does have a headphone jack/hdmi port

I'll give this a shot. When you say remove the battery, are you talking about the battery on my mobo? My motherboard has a CMOS clear button but the PSU needs to be plugged in for it to work I think...

you are SUPPOSED to leave the PSU plugged in but switched off. there is no static build up that will go away. if you left it on you may have shorted something out. or you could have fried the audio with static electricity. unplug everything from it but the speakers from the card , including the front panel sound . if its still messed up you can buy a cheap audio card

GPU cards have on-board audio (if your GPU has HDMI out) and useing the HDMI out on the GPU will bypass the motherboards sound.

Can you elaborate a little on this? What is the purpose of unplugging everything from the mobo excluding speakers?
