Hi all,

My current situation is,
I have a desktop at home with Internet connection. I also have a laptop and a smartphone which need internet. I figured I need to create wifi hotspot and share internet from the desktop. Unfortunately the desktop has no WiFi card. So I ordered a DWA-131-Wireless N Nano USB Adapter.

I thought that the adapter would help me create hotspot and share the connection, but I found no references of creating hotspots or anything in the online PDF file so I'm a bit confused and the shipment is yet to be delivered.

So, I'm asking, Am I going the right direction by buying the adapter???

Solution

Yes, it will probably work. Not great range and speed, but probably.

Ahh.. The thing is, my internet connection is a little peculiar. See, the desktop is connected to a wireless USB modem which is INSIDE my Landline phone. It has no drivers for Windows vista let alone windows 8 which my laptop has. And it is dial-up. So there's no question of using a wifi router and directly connecting the laptop to phone/modem.

And my idea is, to get a device for the desktop a device that can create WiFi hotspot and share so that I can surf on my laptop and the smartphone.

Wow. That is weird on so any levels.

But your concept would probably work. ICS in Windows. But that Nano USB thing is probably not the best. There is only so much antenna they can cram in that little thing.

Yeah I know that and am trying to convince that to my dad the very same. I know how to create hotspot on my laptop and share internet connection, I do it all the time in the college hostel. I just wanna know whether the device will do what I want it to do.

And BTW what do mean by those last two sentences?? Care to suggest a better option?

The nano WiFi devices are pretty limited in signal strength and range. A PCI-E WiFi card, with actual antennas, would work much better.

Then again, I'll be using the devices in the same room most of the time and rarely outside the house. So, does it mean it might as well WORK??
A finalizing question.

Will it work. Yes or No???
If Yes, Thank You so much for your help, it's highly appreciated.

If No, Please suggest a solution. I'll see if I can cancel the product. It still takes 1 week to get to my place. Thanks again. Waiting to hear from you.

Aaawww man Thanx alot. I don't care for speed now. I'll somehow get my dad to get a 4 Mbps connection later on. It'll do fine for now 'cause I'll be staying here for like a month and won't be back for 3 months or so.

If it doesn't work, atleast I got a Wifi adpater I can use at the hostel.

Thanks again man, cheers.
