Why do i run minecraft so slow?

okay, with my PC i am running games like Planetside 2 with much higher FPS than i get in minecraft... i would still class minecraft as easily playable (Around 50FPS). but it just confuses me as to why the frames are almost always under 60FPS... i thought my PC would handle it better than that.

I think Minecraft has VSync on automatically, check that.

do you have any applications on while playing that can cause fps lock? i know fraps has fps lock.
