get better wifi connection in family room

I have comcast cable for tv and internet. My modem/router is in the basement (where my main computer is) and my smart tv is upstairs in the family room. The connection upstairs is very slow and I've been unable to watch netflix or Amazon instant even though the tv shows that i have a strong wifi connection. Would moving the modem upstairs improve this situation?

Anything that is physically located between the router and the device can create an issue. Electrical lines, florescent lighting, microwave ovens, cordless phones, etc., will create the most problems, but things as simple as HVAC ducts, wood (floors, walls), plumbing, etc., will create some problems.

Try this first - try to locate the router directly underneath the TV (closest proximity to the location of the TV), and try moving it around (including rotating the router side to side - as directionality has some effect on routers).

leave the modem where it is, just install an access point and repeat the signal inside the house.
