So I just bought a dell ( I know, I know, but I get a massive discount from work..so try not to rag on me too harshly ) And I am trying to install this graphics card:
ASUS Graphics Cards with ASUS Exclusive DirectCU Thermal Solution (HD7850-DC2-2GD5-V2)
It clicks in fine, and has the right port, but the dell doesn't seem to have a place to plug in the additional 6pin pci-e power supply. It has two free HDD Sata ports, and a bizarre 8 pin VGA power slot ( which dell had no idea on the phone what it was....)
~ Would it be possible to run a separate PSU just for the graphics card? I know ideally I could update the power supply, but Keep in mind that the power supplies on dells are really tough to replace (without just buying a new dell)
This thread from many years ago has the "Thermaltake Purepower Power Express" to gain the extra power AND the pci-e cable
Would this solve the issue? Is there a newer version of this now discontinued product?
~Or would it be possible to use the hdd sata ports with an adapter in order to run the card?
Specs:
Dell Precision T3600 workstation.
Intel® Xeon® Processor E5-1620 (Four Core 3.6GHz, 10M, Turbo)
425W PSU
Additionally purchased and installed
Samsung Electronics 840 Pro Series 2.5-Inch 256 GB SATA 6GB/s Solid State Drive MZ-7PD256BW
