I purchased one the other day for only a few pounds, and have no idea how to use it! xD

How do I use it?

My case is the corsair 300R, and the PSU is the CX600. Please note that both of these are painted black, and I can't see any unpainted parts.

Could anyone run through the exact steps that I need to follow please?

Do I need the PSU in the case? Does it need to be switched on at the wall? Does it need to be switched on on the actual PSU itself?

Anything else?

This is my first build, so I would appreciate clear, simple instructions.

Thanks a ton!

Electro-Static Discharge happens when the electro-static current in your body differs from whatever you are touching.

In the case of computers it can be problematic if you are positively charged, and are holding a sensitive component (CPU) and go to touch a un-charged or negatively charged computer. The electrical current will pass through the component, possibly frying it.

an anti-ESD strap basically equalizes or grounds you, so that the case and you have the same charge, so there is no current that is exchanged. You can do the same thing by just touching the case before picking up the component. and leaving your opposite hand resting on the case during installation.

However, in regards to how to use it. It does not need to be on bare metal. Paint is not enough of an insulator to keep the charge from transferring.

It can be attached to any metal part of the case.

It doesn't matter if the PSU is installed in the case or not.

It is preferable for the PSU to be unplugged *always* when working on internal components to prevent shorts.

EDIT:

By the way, just for reference...

A CPU generally runs on around 1.5V

A CPU can generally survive a 10V shock.

A human can not feel a static discharge of less than 1,500V

An ESD discharge that can be heard and seen (for example walking on carpet with socks, then touching a door knob) is generally 12,000 to 20,000 V
