USB to SATA adaptor

I have a USB to SATA/IDE adaptor. Disk Management sees disk, but does not show partitions, etc. It says I need to initialize the disk, Won't initialize, I guess because it says the disk is "Offline". The disk is an old disk and has a XP operating system on it, but the adaptor is supposed to allow access to the disk. The data on the disk is not important, I just want to use the disk to save some files onto.
You help will be appreciated.

initialize it then.... It will wipe the disk, if it can properly access it. Then format it.

Sorry, but your answer appears incomplete. I have tried to initialize it, but initialize is not accepted when I right click. It says the disk is offline, but I can't find a way to get it online. All indications on disk management indicate that the drive is healthy, and I know the drive is running.

I click on "Offline" AND IS SAYS "DISK IS NOT READY".
