Whenever I try to play games online like Counter Strike, Grand Theft Auto 5, or Call of Duty, the internet cuts out. If I try to browse the internet during this brief 2-3 minute hiccup, then it gives me a message that says "The cable for ethernet is not plugged in" when clearly the cable is plugged in. This problem also persists when I try to use internet strenuous tasks such as FaceTime or Skype. I have had multiple service techs come to my house to diagnose the problem, but they have proved to be rather unhelpful. Any suggestions?

I have the same router as you and ran into the same problems. I am assuming you must have updated to the latest firmware? For some of the later firmware revisions with the router you need to hard reset it after updating the firmware.

When I say hard reset, you actually need to take a paper clip and hold down that small button for 5 seconds until it reboots. Simply restarting the router without hard resetting it does not fix the issue.

I tried that and it seemed to work for a few hours, but now it is back to the usual routine. It will allow you to play online for a few minutes before it disconnects the internet in the whole house just to reboot shortly after. I thought that maybe the modem was bad, but the tech support guys all told me that the modem was not the problem. They were unable to determine the problem. Is there anything else you can think of?

hmmm interesting. I think your best bet would try a different firmware revision, ASUS has back versions listed on their site. http://support.asus.com/download/ModelList.aspx?SLanguage=en&keyword=rt-n66u&type=1

.720 and .276 have both been stable for months now

The ASUS RT-N66U is a quality router and should not reboot even under the most intensive network situations. It must not like the firmware version that it has.

That did not seem to do anything in regards to the problem. It still persists. I have tried opening certain port forwarding options as well and that has proved to be unsuccessful as well. I do not know what else to try. Your help is greatly appreciated. Any more ideas?

Do you mean the physical port on the rear of the router? Excuse me for being inexperienced in the matter.

Yes, there are four yellow LAN ports. try a different one.

I have tried that. Nothing seems to be fixing the problem. I even had another internet tech visit the house and he told me that they were working on the problem. The issue still persists. I feel as though I am SOL in this situation.
