I have the alienware Aurora specs: intel core i5 2400 CPU 3.10ghz, Nvidia gtx550ti. was looking to upgrade the motherboard, CPU, GPU. was looking to spend 3-400$ on the CPU and GPU. and up to 200 on the motherboard. need some guidence. Strictly gaming.

Solution
you don't need a cpu..........

1.) what motherboard do you have?
2.) how much ram do you have?
3.) what is your monitor resolution?
yes +1.
that CPU is good enough to handle games for few more years.
However your CPU is quite entry level for that resolution so a best GPU upgrade will be like R9 280x (with decent cooling like Asus DC II or msi etc.. or 770 :).
i would recommend 280x due to extra 1GB of Vram which will help you for getting stable FPS at your resolution. However 770 will be fine too :p
Also, better would be getting a CPU cooler and overclock your CPU to avoid any bottleneck (though you wont)
