I am buying a new computer over the next few days, right now i can only afford the computer without an operating system, but i was planning on plugging in my old hard drive and using my vista 32, however my new computer has 8 gigs of ram so i would like to upgrade to 64 bit, I've heard that you can use your product key from 32 bit for 64 bit, but would i still have to pay for a full 64 bit disk with a new license key anyway? Or is there just an "upgrade" disk or something I could use?

More about : upgrading 32bit

Best solution

a b $ Windows 7
a b * Windows 8

The same licence key can certainly be used for both 32 and 64 bit versions of the same edition of Windows 7 and Windows 8, but I am not sure if the same is true for Windows Vista. I would assume that it is, but I cannot say for certain.

With that said, Microsoft has made available installation ISOs for Windows Vista and Windows 7 through the Digital River download service. Links below

Vista:

7:

If you think that purchasing a new edition is an option down the road you can always download and install Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 as a trial for 90 days before activation is required.

8.1:

EDIT: Windows 8/8.1 are available in ISO format but you won't find these publicly available from Microsoft, they are only available on Technet/MSDN, and of course other places if you know where to look.
