I am currently trying to make a network attached server as a storage device for my computers around my house, now I already built a freeNas system and I had no success with getting it up and running. Now I am new to the whole server building, I just really want to have it so the computers can share files and documents between them. Does anyone have any advice that would make my process of building a Network Attached Storage device easier. Thank you (I will give more information on my server computer as I get answers) - Pat

What doe you mean by external computers? External on the internet behind the router or on your home network? Did you assign a static IP address to the server?

Thank you for your response, well I installed it the way everything was supposed to be setup by. However my computer is ATA when I am guessing the new hardware requirements for FreeNAS are much higher than what I am running. But when the server was up and running it was at the console and I was able to get onto the web UI where everything was configured to what I though it should be, but none of my external computers could pick up the presence of the server. Should I get an older version of the software?

I mean the computers that are connected to the router. I did set my static IP I just made it 8.8.8.8, I saw a guy on youtube set on up and I copied him. What should I make my Static IP?

8.8.8.8 is a public ip, in this case the well known google dns server. That doesn't work!. The computer connected to your router get there ip addresses from the routers DHCP. It's most likely from the range 192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255. Lookup the exact range in your router. The static ip for the NAS needs to be outside the DHCP range, but inside the same network. 192.168.1.31 for example, if the DHCP range is set to 192.168.1.2 - 1.30

Let me give that a try! I will report back what comes of that, thanks again for the help! I will try that now!

Do you recommend that I attempt to run it in VirtualBox or proceed as I was previously?

I don't see a need for virtualbox.
