I have used Vista Ultimate for a few years and aside from some acknowledged problems it has performed ok-until yesterday. I was using word and left the computer unattended for a couple of hours. When I returned, the sign in screen was on and had symbols in the password box. When I erased the symbols and signed on all of my applications appeared with symbols. Restarting the computer had no effect, and using the original DVD did not find any problems. I am Kaspersky on this and two other computers-no problem with the other two. Help.

Sounds either a virus or someone sneakingly changed the language settings while you were away.

Thanks for your reply. The language settings are correct and I can't access Kaspersky (app is all symbols) to check for a virus. As I said, both my other computers (one running Vista, the other Windows 8) are fine. I am wondering if I have hard drive problem but not sure how I would check it since everything is in symbols.
