Hi! I have Verzion Fios with the Verioin router that supports gigabit. From the Fios modem to the router, I believe the cable used is cat5 not 5e. If I buy Cat 6 cables and hook them up to the router ports, could I still have the gigabit network?

If your getting the full speed you are paying for it may not be worth the bother if your only changing the wire between modem>router and its short, Ever wire connected to the router wants to be 5e / 6

The router needs to be gigabit to have the lan run at 1000.

Cat5 can handle gigabit speeds, but generally is not rated for that. Is your internet plan greater than 100MBps? If yes, then perhaps upgrading to Cat5e or Cat6 on that one cable may help but I doubt it will really make a difference. If your internet plan is less than 100 Mbps then your Cat5 should handle that throughput with no problem so that isn't a problem or source of any bottleneck.
