LGA 1366 or LGA 1155/1150

Hey guys, I have GA-X58A-UD7 Mobo and a core i7 930 CPU, and I think it is time for an upgrade, but I am also having some hesitations because the LGA 1155/1150 cpus to me are not that powerful, but i might be wrong. So tell me what you guys think. P.S I cant buy a LGA 2011 cpu and mobo because there too expensive atm and i have a low budget.

Solution
Assuming the same number of core and clock speed the average performance increase in generations is a follows:

1st gen -> 2nd gen = 12%
2nd gen -> 3rd gen = 6%
3rd gen -> 4th gen = 6%

Therefore going from 1st gen to 4th gen would on average be about a 25.8% increase in performance. That does not mean you will see a 25.8% increase in frame rates within games.
What is the reason for leaving the i7 930 / X58 platform?

There won't be much that you can upgrade to and "feel" like it was worth the money to do so when coming from the i7-930 unless you have a locked CPU and are stuck under the 3.0GHz ceiling.

What skit75 said. Just what is your budget and what are you wanting to be the outcome? Maybe you can o/c that 930 and go with a better video card for another year or so. If you already have a nice 6xx or 7xx series Nvidia or 7xxx or later series AMD card you should probably consider the 1150 board and a 4 core Intel chip, o/c'ing is optional.

I know this is an old thread and you've probably already upgraded, but for the sake of others with a similar question, maybe you could find a used i7 970 or 980. They're hexa cores and the 2 extra cores would probably be enough of an upgrade to not need a new motherboard because they're the same socket type. on ebay they're about $220-$250, so about the same price as today's i5's. They're also the 975, 980x, and 990x if you want to overclock a couple hundred more mhz

Are you a bit confused, sandbox? You're talking about an i7cores and motherboards but seem to be referring to video cards when suggesting, 970, 980, 975, 980x and 99ox which are GPU designations.

I also have an old Intel Core i7 970 3.2GHz, LGA1366 and want to build a new machine.
What is the latest & greatest stuff?
I'm just starting to research today for the 1st time since 2011...
What have I missed or better, where are we now?

well intel just released the new i7 6700k. it's LGA 1151, 4.0 ghz stock speed, and it's 14nm. It's got 8 threads, where as yours has 12. but being 5th generation, where as yours is 1st gen, it may perform a bit better and it supports some newer technology.

Hey thank you for that! I will begin looking into it more closely...
Any particular motherboards that you favour to go with it?
I am interested in experiencing some of the newer security technologies like TPM too.

BTW- I have a couple of 4GB RAM sticks kicking around & it would be nice to be able to use them rather than spend more money on new RAM.... Corsair Vengeance 12GB (3x4GB) DDR3 1600 MHz (PC3 12800) is that still any good or will I need to just move on to newer stuff?

well the new generation is supposed to be able to support ddr3 and ddr4 RAM. You should still be able to use your ddr3 ram with it. I don't actually have the 5th gen processor. I've goth the i5 4690k (4th gen, lga 1150) so I can't really recommend a specific motherboard, but typically I choose between ASUS and Gigabyte. You can pretty much choose from this list of Motherboards that support ddr3: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Order=BESTMATCH&Description=lga+1151&N=100007627%20600036387&isNodeId=1

if you guys are still looking at more modern stuff, i'm starting to think about selling my Z77 and i5-3570k since i have two too many computers, and that Z/k is ridiculous overkill for what i need.

should i make a proper classified ad for you?

it's an ASRock Z77 Extreme 3 (full ATX, link http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/Z77 Extreme3/)
i recently flashed the BIOS to the latest 1.50
it's an Intel i5-3570k
neither has ever been overclocked - honest! they were on sale so cheaper than non-Z / non-k items at the time
have i/o shield of course, and stock i5 cooler (the cpu normally runs below 15% load the way i do things)
i live in canada, so shipping would be TBD

anything i missed?
