Is Haswell worth the money?

I was building a computer on a budget bow I have recently received a cash injection that allows me to possibly scrap the Ivy Bridge CPU amd mobo and go Haswell if I want but is it worth it? I currently have an i3-3220 so going from that to the i5-3570K alone will be a massive power bump.

If you already have Ivy Bridge, then upgrading to Haswell is not worth the extra cost of replacing the motherboard.

On average, assuming the same number of cores and the same clockspeed, the performance difference would be 6%, perhaps 7%. Therefore, it is not worth spending the extra $90 - $120 for a mainstream Z87 chipset motherboard just so that you can overclock a Haswell i5-4670k CPU.

Am replacing my motherboard anyway so it would just mean spending a little more for Haswell.

Depends a lot on what mobo you have. If you have a regular pc, and your mobo is a simple one that doesn't allow you to upgrade much further, then I'd go with haswell. But if you do that, get a better mobo so you'll be able to upgrade it later like supporting sli / crossfire on 8x/8x, space to hold a pcie x1 sound card, etc etc.

Just read it. If you're getting another mobo you definitely want to go with the new 1150 socket (haswell).

Hum... I really think that 50$ is still worth the upgrade, since the 4670k, if watercooled, is one of the easiest to overclock. Not to mention you still gain about 7% on stock speed, as you have stated.

Legolas. Last time I looked an i3-3220 is an 1155 socket. He can plug an i5-4 core or better CPU and be ready to go with his current mb. I have both an i5-2500K on an 1155 moboand an i5- 4670 on an 1150 mobo and for the $$$ spent, there isn't much difference.

Depends on how much you need what few features Z87 offers over Z77. Performance-wise, in most cases the 4670K is roughly 6% faster than the 3570K, but in most cases the 3570K will also overclock more than 6% higher than the 4670K while consuming less power under load. That said, you shouldn't really base your purchase decision between IVB and Haswell on overclocking, since it is a bit of a gamble and you may get a lucky 4670K that'll do 4.8GHz and you may get an unlucky IVB that won't pass 4.4GHz. The worst case I've heard so far is a guy who got a 4670K that couldn't pass 4GHz, which is only 200MHz over the stock turbo clock.

Even so, a 4670K at around 4.4GHz is comparable to a 4.7GHz 3570K, so the difference between the two will be minute, even if the 3570K can reach a higher clock. If the prices of a Z87 and 4670K are within $10-20, I'd say sure grab the 4670K. Otherwise there's not much reason to spend the extra bucks on Haswell.

But yeah - if you already have an LGA 1155 board and you aren't scrapping it along with your i3, you could save a bunch of money and just pop in an i5 3570 or something and nearly double your performance. Though if your board is B75 or H77 you wouldn't be able to overclock, so no point grabbing the unlocked 3570K.
