Data still exists after format

I was working on a windows vista HP Pavilion DV6000 last night. I created a boot-able W98 Dos usb drive and formatted the hard drive with "format c: /s"

Then I re-installed Vista from a disk and found all 80+ GB of original data in the "old windows" folder. The computer seems to be much more responsive than it was before, but I expected all of the data to be gone. What did I do wrong?

If you are re-installing Vista and want to wipe the disk, why try doing a format using another disk first?
When you boot off the Vista disk, it will give you an option do first delete any existing partitions and format them before setup.

Depending on how the Win98 boot disk was setup, C: may not have been the hard drive. In some disks I used, I setup a ROM disk as C: which made the hard drive D:.
windows 98 dos does not work with ntfs files systems only FAT and FAT32 systems which is what I guessing is ur file system because u have vista. therefore it would not be able to format it. Only other thing I can think of is ur partition was not assigned letter C:. My best guess. Next time I would get the dos based hard drive tool for ur hard drive brand and run its erase feature
