i have the fx6100 and upgrading to a fx9370 soon

currently have the sapphire hd 7850 gpu

if i get the cpu and r9 290 will i get massive improvment or is it not worth the cost?

games run avg 40 fps but drop to 20 time to time
some games are maxed out (GTA IV), others on lowest settings (Assassins creed IV)

Do not get the 9370. Get an 8320 and overclock it. A 290x will give you a pretty good improvement. The 9370 is just a waste of money, it runs hot and not much faster than an overclocked 8320, and you can barely overclock it due to the temperatures it runs at. I would suggest getting a GTX 780, 8320, and Corsair H100.

Ok i went and got the 8320 and the improvement is amazing, but ive been put off the 290x because of the temp and noise, will getting a nvidia card work ok with amd? ive been told its wierd to mix nvidia with amd, ive been looking at the 780 and i can afford it

Yeah don't bother with the 780TI, it's too expensive for the performance, go for a GTX970. I just got the Gigabyte G1 gaming GTX970 and i'm getting over 60fps in EVERY game, even demanding ones like The Evil Within, Metro 2033, Crysis 3 etc.. at max settings 1080p, hell i still get 60 fps even at 1440p in most of the games i've tried, and i haven't even overclocked it yet!!. (using an I5-3570K CPU, 8GB RAM, Asrock H61M-HVS cheap motherboard)

Here's a link to the Gigabyte G1 970, much cheaper than a 780TI ($369 for the 970, $450+ for the 780TI) and the 970 performs slightly better than a 780 in most cases, and overclocks even better, especially this G1 gigabyte which is factory overclocked to 1,329mhz already. Some people are reporting hitting 1,600mhz with the G1's. (just make sure it fits in your case, it's 12.2 inches long. if it won't go for a smaller 970 model like the ASUS strix or MSI golden edition)

(that's the 970 G1)

If you really want to spend the dough on a 780TI then go for a GTX980 instead, it'll beat out the 780TI for about the same price, and has the advantages of the new 900 series just like the 970 (MFAA anti-aliasing, Direct-X 12 etc..)

Here's a link to benchmarks showing the GTX970 almost tying with the 780TI (for $100-150 less than the 780TI), and the 980 beating out the 780TI by a fair amount.

GTX980's for $550ish

Another reason that the 970 or 980 is better than the 780/780ti is the power usage and heat. A GTX780TI uses a whopping 250watts TDP with alot more at full load during heavy gaming, whereas the GTX970 has a TDP of 148 watts, with the 980 having a TDP of 165 watts. This likely means you won't have to change your power supply, i'm running my 970 with a 550watt XFX 80+ bronze PSU i picked up for $39 on sale. Whereas with AMD cards or GTX780/780TI you'll need at least 600-650watts minimum, maybe more, not to mention the lower heat means better overclocking without having to buy a water cooling loop system, yet again saving you more money for even better gaming performance.

Turns out that the MFAA anti-aliasing is no joke too, in most games people are seeing a 10-15fps increase (sometimes 20!) over using MSAA or SMAA, and it doesn't look blurry or worse like FXAA tends to, it's equal to MSAA in overall AA quality.

Wrong...just wrong. My 970 is beating my 780 in every way and almost equal with a 780ti i've been testing it against (5-8% lower at most). Then add in the new MFAA anti-aliasing that the 780/780ti don't have which gives AA quality equal to MSAA but raises fps by ~15 compared to real MSAA and you have a card that will eventually tie with a 780ti imo. (And the 780 ti does NOT run super cool, the 780 and 780ti are almost water block worthy without even using SLI if you overclock very much at all)

And just because you don't care about heat and wattage and noise doesn't mean other's don't. The fact of the matter is that it DOES cost money to run high watt setups especially since he wants to get an FX9000 series CPU which use more wattage than a 780 for crying out loud. Combine the nearly 300watts of that, the 250+ watt of the 780ti and system wattage and your looking at nearly all of that 750 watt psu (calculator with those cpu/gpu puts me at 715 watts) that's quite an electric bill compared to an I5 (90-95 watts) and a gtx970 (148 watts) with system which comes out to 456 watts. And of course there's the fact that the 970 is $100-150 less than the 780ti, and that you could even SLI with 2 970 on a quality 750w psu for the future.

lol i run 2x 7970's @ 1200 on the core, my i5 4670k is running @ 4.8, i pay less then $3 per day in electricity, I don't see how anyone would let that decide the card for them, 780TI rapes the 970 bro. In all benchmarks, and that's before you overclock.

The 970 is pretty close to the 780ti, they're really equivalent cards in performance, and that's how they're intended. The 970 has other benefits, though, such as running cooler and requiring less power. The 780ti draws 250w while the 970 draws 145. This means it's quieter, more efficient, and just overall better. Less draw means less strain on your PSU, meaning it won't wear out as fast, even expensive ones do.

Edit: Just read the "and that's before you overclock." Cooler quieter more efficient card means that the 970 will be BETTER after you overclock.
