New GPU boots to BIOS Screen and "freezes" HELP

specs:

700 watt XtremeGear psu
i7 3820
gigabyte gtx 760 (upgrading from a 550ti)
gigabyte x79 ud3 mobo

If you guys could help me out that would be awesome.

You may have a 700w power supply, but the amps it can provide on the 12v rails are important also.
By fitting the new card it may require slightly more amps to run.

The psu is clearly not up to the job sorry to say. In respect to amp output on the 12v rails or the claimed 700w output.

Why it jumps to the bios screen instead of booting is the bios trying to tell you there is a power problem. More than likely if power monitoring of the bios of the mother board is doing its job it`s why it sends you to the bios. Its detecting an unstable voltage.

Because its so unstable due to fitting the card and more power draw it will also freeze the bios.

Test it with another psu if you can and it will confirm the problem if it enters the bios, without freezing. And boots fine then it was the cause.

So this is definitely a psu output shortage and not a motherboard problem?

Well I sum up a 760 card requires more power than a 550ti card.
So if you go on the basis the system was stable with the 550 ti card.

And then started to freeze as soon as the 760 was fitted and it was new out of the box, not second hand.

Yes power related, If you could borrow a friends Psu to test and it works ok.
Then you know the answer as to why its freezing. But I suspect it is the case.

The board you have is a good quality one.

alright, sorry if i am asking to many questions, but i have been reading that many people have updated their motherboard's BIOS to make it work. I do not mind forking out more cash to allow my system to work properly but could this be a probable reason?

Im having the same problem, the computer shop is telling me I have a good enough PSU and I have updated my BIOS and it still freezes!

PSU - OCZ ZSseries 750w
Motherboard - H61MA-D2V
Processor - i3-2120 CPU @ 3.30GHz (4 CPUs), ~3.3GHz
and the graphics card I am trying to fit is a GTX 770

Did you solve your problem mate?

You can try a bios update for your board in question.
Some times a bios firmware upgrade is required when adding new hardware.
And can fix problems with systems locking up or going to the bios.

The best thing to do is find the maker of your board, and its model number.

You can find the current bios revision as it stands by looking at your motherboard where it should be printed in white.
Or a sticker is placed on the bios chip it`s self with the bios revision number.

Go to the maker of the board enter the model number of the board.
Then look at the support page for it.

It should list a a bios update revisions. With a listing of tweaks and fixes.
As a rule the most current version may resolve problems you currently have with hardware added to the motherboard.

The flash program and bios should be provided in the support section.

Ive updated it mate, still no luck, could it be my PSU or motherboard?

Azmoore, If the system you had was using the on board graphics prior to fitting the Pci-e graphics card. And none was fitted to the Pci-e slot.

Remove the 770 Ti card.

Plug the monitor cable into the graphics port out put of the board.
Let the computer post and enter the bios.

From there look for the graphics options, there will be a list of what device to initialize as the primary default graphics output device, This should be set to Pci-e or Peg.

If you can turn the on board graphics chip set off do so.
Save the settings in the bios, and exit.
Power the system off and re connect the 770 Ti card and all it power feeds it requires.
And the monitor cable back to the 770 Ti card as well.

Then restart the system.
Let me know if it works when entering the bios and does not freeze.
I think it may resolve the problem, but let me know if it works.

I think the lock up is because the Pci-e slot has to be set first in the bios and the fact it needs to know what the default graphics output device is.

I don`t think it`s a power problem on thinking about it now but a case of the board having a conflict between On board graphics and the 770 ti fitted to the pci-e slot of the board. It should with luck resolve the lock up and freeze.
