Hey guys, friend of mine is trying to build a brand new desktop for $400 dollars.
Could someone suggest a build for him? I was thinking about selling him my GTX 460 and a CX 430 for 80$, does anyone have a better suggestion for the money in performance?

That would be a great deal to sell to him. He can't get anything as good for the price. To get something with the same performance would be getting a Radeon HD 7790 and a EVGA 500B both for around $150.

Now I picked a dual core because it is Intel. In my opinion, AMD would not be a good choice for a CPU because they offer much lower performance than they should. With their specifications, they should be able to completely smash Intel, but they fail on one part of the CPU. The optimization. They fail to optimize the cores of the CPU to work together. So instead of having the cores work with each other, one does all the work, and the other are idle, maybe every now and then another core will jump in to help, but its not going to take a lot of work off the other core.

In most cases a dual core i3 will out preform a AMD 6 core when gaming.

So here is the build.
CPU: Intel Core i3-4330 3.5GHz Dual-Core Processor ($116.99 @ NCIX US)
Motherboard: MSI H81M-E33 Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($53.99 @ Mwave)
Memory: Kingston 4GB (1 x 4GB) DDR3-1333 Memory ($35.70 @ NCIX US)
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($58.99 @ NCIX US)
Case: NZXT Source 210 (Black) ATX Mid Tower Case ($37.99 @ Microcenter)
Optical Drive: Lite-On iHAS124-04 DVD/CD Writer ($14.99 @ Newegg)

Total: $318.65

This build could be a lot cheaper if I was to pick older parts. But having the newest stuff is a good thing. Like better driver support.

This dual core will be fine for gaming at 720p. But when you get to 1080p, the CPU will start to bottleneck. So my idea is that he can upgrade his CPU in the future and get a quad core processor.

Most people with a build this low go with AMD. And that's fine, the CPU will do what it's suppose to do, just not well. If you want, I can put together a AMD build.

I'm probably going to tell him to get the FX 6300 because it's just better than any i3. Plus it OC's better, according to some people.

Like I said "In most cases a dual core i3 will out preform a AMD 6 core when gaming".

If you want to go with AMD, that's fine. Just if you ever try to upgrade the CPU, then its not going to be much of a upgrade.

Look at these benchmarks.

BF4, which can use more than 4 cores.

If you want to go with AMD, that's fine. Your just not getting what you think you are getting. AMD is all about specs. And if you ever try to upgrade the CPU, then its not going to be much of a upgrade.
