It had been hardly two months I had bought my Sony Vaio Laptop. Windows 8. and it starting hanging. Complete black screen. I had no option but to refresh my laptop. At first I thought it was unfixable. But then it promised to keep my files too. So after refreshing, This is what happens. You aren't allowed to access the C drive. and you're like wth. Nothing seems to be working. You feel doomed. You discover that none of your files are there. You get a panic attack and really regret that you refreshed it, but you had no choice, right. I tried looking up the problem. This happens to everyone who refreshes their laptop. I tried fixing it on my own and I did succeed. I knew that there was a problem in the authorization of the drive. I tried looking at all the settings.
I went to C drive Properties.
Security. Then clicked on Advanced Settings.
Went to Permissions.
Add User. Click on Select Principal. Here you type the name of the user/owner. That is you. The name that your computer is under. such as JOHN. You type that name. Then you check all boxes that you have full permission and authority to all of the files. Then click Apply.
Hopefully after that your C drive will be able to open now.
In case of your lost files, they won't appear automatically that fast. I think it takes a little time. It doesn't appear in your visible library on your left. It will appear in your User library. Owner of computer. You go there and try to click on each folder. At first it won't let you open it at first. But it takes time to load and hopefully then all of your files will reappear. If it is not it the selected folders, I mean to say that you might find your Documents in the Music folder. That's what happened to me. But they have removed programs that you previously installed There will be a document on your desktop saying "Removed Apps". They usually keep windows related programs. My Antivirus is still on desktop. But I'm not sure if it will work properly. I might have to uninstall and reinstall it. Also I noticed that I can't put any picture as my background, Also I am able to change the color of it. So I'm sure you are able to download the programs that you have lost and hopefully find all the files that you thought you lost.
Hope it helped out.

Usually, when you do a Refresh, it will backup and save your files to C:\Windows.old and then you have to physically put them back into your user profile. ie. Move items from "C:\windows.old\users\username\Desktop" to C:\Users\username\Desktop. Move the actual items inside the Desktop folder and not the "Desktop" folder itself.

The Programs that were installed by using the Windows Store should be reinstalled, but if not, you can just go into the Windows Store and click Install, as they will all be listed there.

The other Desktop programs that you installed outside of the Windows Store, will have to be reinstalled via their setup programs where-ever you put them, or you will have to re-download them from where you downloaded them. The icons on the desktop will not work, they are just there to list which programs did not get reinstalled and serve as a reminder of what you had before doing a Refresh.
