Second opinions on first build

Hey guys so I'm building my first PC soon for mostly Adobe software in particular video editing and occasional gaming (maybe not that occasional :p) I'm getting parts in Australia so bare in mind the price differences. I do plan on overclocking in the future when I need the power so I'll buy a better heat sink when the time comes. So after months of research this is the build which I have come up with :)

Specs:

CPU: Intel i5 4670k

Mobo: Asrock z87 extreme3
(has all the features I need and is in my price range plus it has SLI capabilities which is quite a plus over its opponents in that price range)

Memory: Crucial Ballistix sport 8gb 1600mhz
(I've read good things about these sticks as they are 1600 with low timing, so perfect for haswell and going with a single 8gb initially to keep my motherboard open to 32gb in future)

Graphics: ASUS gtx 660 2gb
(solid brand and the performance I'm after)

PSU: Antec HCG 620w semi modular
(Antec's a great psu brand, semi modular, as I'm very much an asthetics guy and my case has a window so I don't want messy cables around)
Storage: 1tb WD blue and samsung 840 evo 120gb ssd
(both mainsteam parts, so they seem like the safe choice)

I've tried my best to go with solid brands (without breaking the budget which has just kept climbing), so I don't have to hopefully deal with things not working as this is my first build. I'd just like some second opinions on my parts choices before I jump at anything :)

Oh also this is my first post on Tom's so some tips on using the forums and unwritten rules would be greatly apprietiated :)

Thanks

Hi SleepGeek and welcome to Toms Hardware.

If your doing this for video editing mostly then id consider going from 8GB's of RAM to 16GB's of RAM as that will help in terms of rendering 10 second shots or snipits of video. Would also upgrade to a i7 4770k as that will help with Video Rendering 100% & Gaming as it is overpowered for Gaming & With that I would go with the Gigabyte Z87-D3HP Motherboard as its mainly a mainstream solid performance motherboard. And if you still have money by the end of all of this I would also go with a better graphics card with more CUDA Cores as more CUDA Cores will render your video a lot faster.

That being said its your build so take the above suggestions into account and see if its worth it for what you want to do. I'm also an aussie. Where are you getting your parts from?

Hope this helped. :D

Hey walshy1009, thanks for the quick reply :D I'm still very much an amateur film maker and I have pretty much no experience with vfx which is the reason I'm making this pc as I'm not going to start renting the adobe suite on my old laptop I have currently :p I might stick with starting with just 8gb stick and add another later and then a dual channel set but for now I'd like to do 8gb to save the money, this is very much a base build for hopefully a future of upgrades and care which is why for the time being I'll stick with the i5 as I just don't really want to spend that much money just yet (I'm 15) but I can see potential for an i7 in the future and the 660 should be adaquet enough but yeah this is a fairly budget build :p however I haven't looked into the z87-d3ph so I'll read up on that now, why do you reccomend it over the asrock board?
Oh and I'll be buying from UMART and MSY (I can pick up from both)
One other thing, how do I reply to a specific message :p?

Thanks

Hey walshy the d3hp has SLI, I'm not sure if I will be doing SLI or just upgrading to a better single card should I do so in the future however I'd like the option to be there.

I recommend a Gigabyte board because Gigabyte make good motherboards and are fairly stable and run well most of the time. As for AsRock I don't think they are that great but it is up to you.

Hmm, gigabyte is clearly a much better brand but the no SLI part of that board is a big deal, I'd like a better board but I Just can put in the money and unfortunately I really have already used up all the wiggle room budget wise, overall though how is this build? and do you see anywhere that money could be spent better?
oh the budget is 1300 btw
Thanks

Its a solid build. 3 things I would do are.

1. Find a Gigabyte board with support for SLI for a good price.
2. Get a 1TB Caviar Black instead of a 1TB Caviar Blue.
3. If you plan to SLI in future upgrade your power supply with a power supply that has more wattage.

Thanks for the feedback, I looked at all the "colours" with the WD HDD and I chose the blue over black as it runs quieter plus it saves a bit of money, I knew about the PSU part and just figured I'd upgrade that with second card but really thinking about it now though I will very likely not be doing SLI. Other than brand preference though are there anythings you see that is better with the d3ph than the extreme3? I feel terrible that you've been giving me all these changes and I keep shooting alot of them down, I just want to say I really apprietiate you helping me out :)

edit: I may be able to get a gigabyte z87-d3h, I'm going to get an asus motherboard because I'm not going to lie, that gold just doesn't work (like I said I'm an asthetics guy :p)

Also a very good choice. I believe the color scheme on that motherboard is Blue? Just trying to think of the color scheme of that motherboard on the top of my head.
