I have two drives in my system, a small ssd os drive and 1TB data drive. A few things have resulted in my data drive (D: ) becoming a dynamic drive being broken up into 4 different volumes. I would like to change it back to a single basic volume without losing any of my data. I tried following a guide for partition wizard but it is not working for me. I click the data drive and select convert dynamic drive to basic but I get an error saying "Partition Wizard cannot convert the specified dynamic disk to basic disk. Because Partition Wizard cannot convert any dynamic volume type expect the simple or mirrored volume." What does this mean and is there any other way to do this that won't lose access to the data? I am currently running windows 8.1.

Use Partition Wizard as before and choose "Simple Volume".
However, I cannot say whether or not your data will be safe unless Partition Wizard has confirmed that it will be.

If I was doing that, I would first copy all my data to a different location so it's backed up (which is something you should already be doing anyway. Having all your data on just one drive is asking for trouble).
