Some IDE-USB cables are primitive & unreliable so you could be wasting your money. A much better way for not much more money is a mains-powered 3.5-inch external hard drive enclosure which plugs in to a USB port. Here's an example of one:
Don't worry if you're running a later version of Windows on your laptop than is shown on the product page. The enclosure will work on any Windows version from XP up to and including Windows 8 because the required drivers are already installed.
