Hi all, I'm building my first proper build and have ordered a gigabyte r9 280x 3gb gpu found here: http://www.dabs.com/products/gigabyte-amd-radeon-r9-280x-1000mhz-3gb-pci-express-3-0-hdmi-windforce-3x-oc-90Z2.html?utm_source=awin&utm_medium=affiliates&utm_content=AW00&awc=3044_1388148309_993899bf3ef0f28cdea2d88e9e07aa1b

however having been on the phone with them, they informed me that it will be about 3 weeks to come in stock and its the same everywhere else for that price range. Me being the impatient kind, I started looking at alternatives. this Asus r9 280x in particular: http://www.dabs.com/products/asus-amd-radeon-r9-270x-1120mhz-2gb-gddr5-pci-e-3-0-hdmi-directcu-ii-top-oc-91BG.html?src=1

it is in stock and reading online, people seem to be suggesting that you don't really need over 2gb graphics with one display. I have a dual monitor set up but one is a lot bigger than the other and I use that one only for gaming, so I was wondering what your advice is.

Is the difference performance wise that big that it's worth waiting for so long?

Thanks a lot :)

280X is definitely better than 270X. If your budget permits go for 280X for sure. It is definitely worth the wait. Regarding the 2Gb Vram , 280X has an extra ram 3gb and this will come into play fully over the next couple of years. You would be on better side going with 280X. Also even playing on a single monitor, 280x will be able to max out most of the games at 1080p, though the card is more than suitable to max out games at 1440p. 270X will also be able to play games at 1080 but same cant be said for the upcoming games or even the latest games at the ultra settings.
My personal experience of playing with 280X is that you are going to be in awe when you hit the game to their extreme settings. Tomb Raider, Far Cry 3, Max Payne 3 , Bioshock Infinite are few games which will be best played at 1080.
280X is even better than 770 as it almost matched it in most of the games performance and even surpasses 770 in many games. Also on top of it it is $30-$40 ( not sure about price though) cheaper than 770

I have the r9 270x, you can play recent games at high setting with 50fps average. On Ultra setting, r9 270x will not perform well in some games (like crysis3, battlefield 4, metro last light).
If you are on tight budget, go for r9 270x.

I am also planning to upgrade from r9 270x to 280x.
