I recently bought the Asus N550 jv with touch screen and 8 gb. The salesman told me I could easily upgrade the memory replacing the the 2 x 4gb by 2x 8gb. I bought the Crucial memory Crucial CT102464BF160B 16GB (2 x 8GB) 204-pin SODIMM, DDR3 PC3-12800 Memory Module B&H Kit. Now the laptop doesn't boot, sometimes, after several tentatives, it will but once shut down again, it will not boot...individually, the memories work fine and with 4gb and 8 gb (12gb), it's ok too. Just the full 16, is showing issues. When I go to the bios, there is no configuration of ram frequency in this laptop, so I don't know if I adjust the frequency, it would solve the problem but I don't even know how to find the frequency config in bios...help please!

If you haven't done so already, update the firmware to the latest revision (currently 208 according to Asus website)

https://www.asus.com/Notebooks_Ultrabooks/N550JV/#support

If that doesn't fix it, then there's a compatibility issue with the Micron SDRAM chips used in that brand of Crucial memory. Most of the time this can be fixed through a firmware update, but Asus will need to release a new one if that is the case. Asus has a good firmware team and they've been known to provide pre-release firmware to affected customers to fix specific bugs, so if the latest release does not fix the issue you may want to contact Asus support to bring this issue to their attention.

It runs windows 8. I updated the bios to 208, but the issue is there...
I'm wondering if other memory brand would solve the compatibility issue. Anyone can recommend?

Tried patriot 2x8GB 1866MHz RAM on on N550. It boots but causes frequent BODs. Memtest fails on each of the modules in this machine. The memtest works fine when the memories are put in other computers.

I have one of these laptops also.
I believe that this model uses low-voltage ram. If you are buying new memory make sure it has an 'L' in the description.
eg: DDR3L(3.5v) notice the L in the description. This might explain why 8 or even 12 Gig worked but 16 was too much draw on the power bus for the full 16GB.
Which goes to show. Do a little research before making your purchase.(especially with this model as you need to remove the back to get at the RAM, 10No t5 screws..... )
Hope this is of some little help to anyone else before they upgrade.

Check out this link to the ASUS FAQ

https://www.asus.com/support/FAQ/1003963/

There is more to RAM than just form-factor or speed in this dawning age of power-concious mobile devices.
Take note all u ultrabook owners.... That is if ur memory isn't soldered to the MB
