Asus Maximus Hero Cpu fan turns on and Motherboard lights up but nothing else

Having some problems with my new build. When I turn the power button on only the CPU fan is spinning while none of the case fans are and there's nothing else going on other than the Start and Reset lights being lit up on the motherboard. I have my monitor plugged into the HDMI port of the motherboard but the monitor doesn't detect anything connected. I've made sure the motherboard and the cpu power cables are plugged in and switched the ram slots up but no luck and have spent about 4 hours trying to figure this out. Help please!

So I just tried that as well has holding the power button down for 30 secs and moving the jumper cap to pins 2 and 3 then back but still the same problem :/.

Right now I don't have any hard drives/ssd or video card installed as I'm still waiting for them so the only things plugged into my system right now are:
1. Maximus Hero MoBo
2. Seasonic 660w Plat PSU
3. 16GB 1866mhz G.Skill RAM
4. 4770k i7 w/ Xigmatek Dark Knight II
Everything is in a Arc Midi R2 Case

I should still be able to have the system boot up into bios with that right?

Thanks!

Do you have a speaker plugged into the motherboard? Would be nice to get some POST beeps lol You might try plugging in the SATA data cable into the MB so it thinks it's outputting. I doubt this would be it almost 100% but ya never know with computers lol

You don't happen to have a GPU by any chance you could plug in do you?

So I tried putting in an old Video card from my current computer in and was pretty sure I didn't have any speakers on the motherboard but when i turned the power on there was this loud, steady alarm like sound coming from somewhere in the computer which was pretty freaky. Any idea what that means?

I forgot to mention that I'm using a Xigmatek Dark knight ii as the cpu cooler with some arctic silver. Possible that it may be from a bad application of the thermal grease?

What would the signs of a bad CPU be? This thing is driving me nuts. I just ordered a system speaker which should be here on Tuesday so hopefully that help me figure out what's going on.

So I tried taking everything out again and plugging it back in including the CPU and still no luck. I'm pretty sure it's the cpu not running and I tried unplugging the 8pin connector for the CPU and it gives me the same results as if I didn't have it plugged in. There's these red numbers that light up on my motherboard that are used for codes for what the errors could be and I have 00 that shows up which in my manual means "Not Used" whatever that means :/. I took a look at the socket earlier but don't believe I saw any bent pins so have no idea what the issue can be.

99 times out of 100 it would not be the CPU, CPUs RARELY go bad. I'm not saying they never do, but it is more likely the motherboard would be bad if it was between the two. You might try giving ASUS a call to their technical support and see what they say about the error code and noise.

By the noise it's making, I'm definitely inclined to believe it's the motherboard. You don't happen to have anything conductive on the underside of the motherboard, like standoffs in the wrong spot?

Nah nothing under my board and I tried booting the motherboard on top of the box that it came in by same problem. I'm going to try and plug my CPU in my friend's computer that I just built a few weeks back and see if it works and if it does then I'll probably return the motherboard back to Newegg and get a new one since I don't have too much time to figure this out as I'll be leaving the country for 3 weeks next week. I tried to do the Asus Bios Flashback with a usb drive but it would just reset the mobo every 2 seconds at first and then when I tried again nothing would happen when pressing the button so I'm guessing the MoBo is jacked. This is like my 8th or 9th computer build and the first time I've ran into problems and it's been such a nightmare :(

Thanks for your responses.

So went to my buddy's and swapped out his 4770k out of his mobo with mine and surprisingly his motherboard was doing the same thing mine was doing with none of the case fans turning that were connected to the board and only the cpu fan and a few lights on his board on. After a couple checks, I then put in his processor into my motherboard and turned it on and finally saw the post screen for the first time! I spent about 3 hours making sure it was my cpu by swapping parts in and out multiple times getting all OCD on it.

I'm hoping I'm able to get a replacement pretty easily. Sucks that I got a bad CPU but maybe this thread may help someone in the future. Finally finding out what the problem is has been a major relief!!

Wow, crazy it's the CPU, that is so rare lol but it sounds like you got it figured out. Glad you got it pinned down, and this is why I said 99 out of 100 lol

Yeah I was definitely surprised but glad at the same time since I heard returning a MoBo could be a nightmare. I actually went out and bought a magnifying glass so me and my friend could examine the pins on the board to see if any were bent somehow but everything was all good haha. I got my 4770k from staples so I'm going to run over there tomorrow and talk to them :)

I'm having a similar issue with this board. This is a brand new build - I've built dozens of machines over the years past but this is my first gaming machine.
ASUS Maximus Hero VI
Intel 17-4790K,
32Gb Gskill Memory - (2) 16GB DDR3 1600Mhz modules
Corsair RM750 power supply
Phantom Case
Windows 7

I'm having trouble understanding the power sequence of the Maximus Hero VI motherboard. I observed the behavior described below before and after I updated the motherboard with the latest BIOS v1603.

The motherboard does not always start as expected; not sure if something is wrong or maybe something is misconfigured in the BIOS. The scenarios are completely repeatable and when it does boot, everything runs fine. Notes:
It makes no difference whether the on board Start button or the chassis Power switch is used.

From a cold start, the board will not run. By cold start I mean the first time pressing the board's Start button after the power supply is plugged in or the power supply itself is switched form off to on. Here's what I see on the cold start: the QCode display starts off with "00", flickers once, and then remains at "00". The fans run and the speaker makes no sounds. The lighted PCB track on the board near the I/O connections remains off.

Pressing the Start button again has no effect while in this state. Holding the Start button for 5 seconds turns off the board. Pressing the Start button again at this point causes the board to boot successfully - the red PCB track lights, the QCode display sequences through the various values, the speaker beeps one time and the board runs fine.

Once the board is running Windows:
Selecting a Windows "Shutdown" turns off the board; the red PCB track stays lit. From this state, pressing the Start button starts the board successfully as expected.

Selecting a Windows "Restart" cause the board to enter the QCode “00” state described above, except that the red PCB track stays lit. And once again, the only way to get the board to run is by holding the Start button for > 5 secs which turns it off and then pressing the power button again.

Update: I was able to get speak with ASUS Tech Support. This is a known issue for this board when using the new 4th Gen Intel processors. The BIOS needs to be updated with a custom BIOS Updater designed specifically for 4th Gen Intel Processors. Even though I had flashed the BIOS with the latest code, I did it with the standard BIOS update tool. I updated it again with the same code and the new utility and the problem is gone.
