So a buddy of mine recently got a pc for Christmas. There is something I'm trying to understand. He has an HD 4000 graphics. But he also only has 4 GB of RAM. I read somewhere that since HD graphcs have no dedication, they start using your RAM. When my buddy starts playing a game and a message pops up that he is low on memory and has to shut the game down. Does that mean he needs more RAM cause the GPU is leaching to much off of it? Would upgrading his PC to 8GB of RAM fix this?

Solution
That's my bad, I didn't notice the laptops tag. I'm not used to seeing laptop questions in the graphics section lol

Yes, RAM would be the only real option then.
It would fix the error possibly, but you don't need to upgrade to be get rid of it. You can also just turn down the graphics of the game in places - like draw distance, texture quality, etc. which will also decrease RAM usage.

An upgrade of RAM would generally be better, but he should really look into getting a dedicated GPU, which would give him MUCH more performance, and free up the RAM as well

The game takes a minimum of 2GB to run. That's with everything turned down. Like I said, he got the PC for Christmas. I was trying to get him a decent gaming PC, but his parents wouldn't go for it. That's why as of right now, upgrading to 8GB is the only thing he can do.

Looks like you have your answer then lol if he has a decently fast flash drive or SDCard he can use that as ReadyBoost as a temporary fix. Much slower than real RAM, but would get him by till the RAM comes in.

I would suggest getting a dedicated card over a RAM upgrade though, if there is any sort of money in the budget.

Since it's a laptop with HD graphics in it. I'm not sure how to upgrade his GPU. Laptops are harder to work with than laptops.
