4GB GTX 770 vs 3GB R9 280X

Solution
The r9 290x.
You will never be able to use all 4gb of ram on the gtx 770 unless you run an sli (I think you will hit the processing limit first).

If you really want a gtx 770 then buy a 2gb version.
or a gtx 780 if you're willing to shell out enough money. Its a little bit more expensive than the r9.

The R9 290x beats the 770. But at the moment, the r9 doesn't have a good cooler. How about the gtx 780 ti? It beats the r9 290x. Also, are you running 1 monitor only @ 1920x1080? The 2gb version will be all you need.

Hold on...the R9 290x is $620 while the GTX 770 is $354. hardly a fair comparison. The R9 290x is more in line with a GTX 780 Ti if you can get a custom cooler model. If you're getting just the reference cooler model then the 290x is more in line with a GTX 780.

The OP posts the question of 4GB GTX 770 vs 3GB R9 280X
Why does the R9-290X come into this?

The GTX770 and R9-280X are comparable cards.
Even then, I would not pay more for the 4gb version, 2gb should be fine.

oh crap...dyslexia. I thought he was asking about the 290x...then i read the first 2 posts and just ran with it. my bad.

I would still say the 770 might edge out because the 280x is about $100 more right now. if only AMD would up production so that prices would fall to MSRP...then Nvidia would have to drop prices as well and we could all win

Because OP edited his post after he realized he posted the wrong card at 7.56 or after the first responses!!

I'm torn between these 2 cards too. I've been reading around a lot and some say that 2gb are becoming too little for modern games, especially for BF4 which supposedly easily saturates the 2gb video ram when on ultra settings and filters set to max @ 1080p. Now I know the 770 may not be capable of processing 4gb of video data, but it's not that you're gonna use all of the available ram, is it? The 2 extra gigabytes give us some headroom for higher filters. So even it fills up to, say, 3gb of ram I guess the 770 is going to handle it pretty well since it performs better than the 280x.
The question is if the 770 is worth the premium over the 280x. In Italy you can get a Sapphire 280x for 270 euros while a 4gb 770 from gigabyte for 320.
I'm starting to think it may not be worth it, since a 770 is something like a few fps faster than a 280x. 50 euros more is like 5 to 10 euros a frame, not so cheap
