Alternatives to Hyper 212 Evo cooler? / How big is it?

I'm upgrading my PC and will be overclocking so I want a good cooler, and the Hyper 212 Evo seems to be the go-to CPU cooler. The problem is, it's quite large, and I have a mid tower that should only just support it. I'm worried that it isn't big enough, so are there smaller coolers that would provide as good performance?

Alternatively, how much room do you actually need for it? I have heard it needs about 16cm of room.

The hyper212 is a good value cooler.
If it will fit, even just barely, go ahead and use one.

Smaller coolers will have smaller fans that are not as effective.

You could use a lower profile downdraft type cooler, but they need extra case ventilation since they do not direct the hot air out of the case.

My case is an In Win Fanqua. It has a big side fan that goes 22mm into the case; I measured from the CPU that the case has ~175mm of room; meaning there's not enough for the Evo.

Is the TX3 as good as the 212? Can you overclock safely to the same points? :)

I should have clarified that I don't want to spend much, sorry. Those Noctua coolers are extremely expensive.

I'm hopefully getting a big top of the range graphics card in 8 months time so will get a case upgrade for that; I'd like to have a cooler that does the job for a bit of overclocking in the meantime, as I'll get a better cooler then.

Also, noise isn't really an issue as I wear noise-cancelling headphones. Thanks anyway :)

The Tx3 noise level is 17.0 - 35.0 dbA and the Evo is 9.0 - 36.0 dbA
