Quite a while ago I bought an HP machine and had troubles with the installed OS and tried Wiping the HD and re-installing a retail Windows of the same type. It would not let me. I ended up returning it.Now I am facing the same issue with Windows 8. I run AutoCAD 2011 and I am looking for a laptop that I can use occasionally when away from my office. It will not run on 8. So my question is if I buy a new laptop with 8, can I reformat it to run 7?

Your best bet - look on the manufacturer's websites to see if they have drivers for Windows 7 prior to purchasing it. It will be an older model (1+ Year old) more than likely....but you do find some that have full Windows 7 support. You will have to purchase a license of Windows 7 unless you get the Windows 8 Professional Version (it includes a free downgrade to Windows 7 Professional).

I have a license of Windows 7 Pro that I can install. But I hadn't thought of backwards compatibility of the newer hardware. I am finding some pretty good deals on some machines that have Win 7 Pro pre-installed. I didn't hink you could still get one.

My desktop has Win7 Pro on it. Bought it 3 months ago.
Win7 will ne around for quite a while. Many corporations refuse to use Win8.
I suspect many will stay with XP, for a while anyway.
