In the setup boot sequence, how do you get past the error?

That depends what the problem is. Not the usual disk read error, so your drive may in fact have died. d610 is a fairly old piece of hardware 2005-2006 if I recall correctly before they switched to making the d620 and d630.

Is the hard drive inside the computer working?
Is the boot order set to go to the appropriate drive.
Is there an external drive (USB hard disk, thumb drive, bootable CD) hooked up? That can cause boot errors.

You might try another bootable device, like an XP install disk, to run chkdsk, fixboot and fixmbr on your physical disk from the console to potentially fix a corrupt boot sector.
