Hi
I am looking to get a new gfx card as I recently sold my 660 ti to get a R9 290 or 290x. 290 is supposed to be $399, but everywhere its more like $529. Its BS. Should I wait for this Litecoin/ Bitcoin mining bs to stop and die down, or should I go with a 780?

More about : 290 290x prices fall normal bitcoin litecoin fiasco 780

Fact is, the prices will probably not go down for a while, however they might with the release of the new 800 series sometime this quarter, this may cause some R9 cards to go down in price. And anyway, the 780 is ~500 so why not spend another 30 to get the 290 if you really want it, but if you don't want to spend that much on the 290, for here and now, just get the 780, maybe overclock it a little to make it perform better and you'll be fine.

Hope this helps!

Go with the 290 then, it's better in most games/benchmarks then the 780, and it's more future proof, better with higher resolutions and what not.

Are you gaming at higher than 1440p (e.g. multi-monitor gaming, 4k)?

If so, it might be worth it to pay a little extra for the R9 290.

If not, the difference between the cards is going to be marginal anyway. You'll get playable framerates on max settings at 1440p on both with any games out right now, and even where one or the other has an advantage in a game, it's usually within 2-3%, which is far, far less than you'll notice while playing.

Either way, if you do get a hawaii-based card, don't get a reference model.

yeah it's utterly ridiculous how the prices on AMD side have skyrocketed, most of the time the cards are sold out as well.

Whichever is in stock, you certainly won't be disappointed with a gtx 780. But if the price difference is only 30 bucks at that point, and you wanted the 290 to begin with, I guess why not spend 30 more bucks lol

idk I feel cheated bc the card is SUPPOSED to be $399, while the 780 is at prices that its supposed to be at. I feel "why should i pay more for something that isn't supposed to be that expensive?" idk i may just go with this 780

yeah I know what you mean. Ended up getting a 660ti for my bro instead of something on the AMD side because I feel cheated paying that much for them when they rarely get in stock. The 780 would be fine, no probs playing everything on ultra. Hell I play everything on ultra with my 7950 lol
