Even older post: I solved the problem as follow:

I had an existing My Wifi Hotspot functionality that just stopped working. After many hours, found that an automatic software update that was performed did not install all the required features of the My Wifi driver, rendering it unable to "Enable" when you click on it. Sadly (stupidly) the Intel My Wifi software does not give you a warning message of the missing driver features - it just goes back to "Not enabled" - no message, no nothing.

Original Instructions (valid for earlier versions)
Go to the Control Panel (both for Windows 7/8)
Click Programs and Features
Select Intel PROSet/Wirelss WiFi Software
Click Change
Then Click Next
Select the "X" on Intel My Wifi Technology (if necessary)
Then Select "This feature, and all sub-features, WILL BE INSTALLED ON THE HARDDRIVE". (THIS IS THE ACTUAL SOLUTION!! - they must all display active/white - not greyed)
Then Press Next
Once the driver has been installed, reboot the laptop
Then test the Intel My WiFi.

For newer versions (Updated to reflect revised instructions and current UI in 2014)
Click Start
Click Control Panel
Click Programs and Features
Select Intel PROSet/Wirelss WiFi Software
Right Click on it and select Change
Then Click Modify
Check the box beside Wireless Software Extensions (THIS IS THE ACTUAL SOLUTION!!)
Then Click Modify
Then Press Finish once completed

Reboot and worked for me

Christiaan, your solution is right on the money. I followed the first method.

BTW, it was WINDOWS update that screwed me, nothing Intel did directly.

But Intel needs to get its act together. All the software I have that SHOULD have solved the problem does not have any help or manner of solution. It should NOT take "many hours" as it did Christiaan and me to, frankly, "luck into" solution through following the tenth hit in a Google about the topic.

ANYWAY, THANKS A BUNCH!! I imagine this is a common problem for Intel WiFi. FOLLOW THIS METHOD IF ALL ELSE FAILS!!!

***** OUT OF 5!

Among the problems I was having, one was being unable to do ANYthing with Intel WiFi Utiity. Every option was grayed out, including everything about profiles.

THE SOLUTION under ANY circumstances is the one after yours.

BTW, even today after using the Answer below, I'm still being told "Adapter not found", which has been going on probably for the seven years I've had this laptop. Again, Intel is letting me down somehow.

But as always before the Windows update screwed me, here I am surfing.

This happened to me after I forgot to block a Windows Update and 98 updates were applied. This is why I had so many outstanding. It had been years since the last, which also caused problems.

What worked for me was to update the Intel Proset Wireless software, which installed a couple programs that I didn't have before: Administrator Tool and Connection Utility, which might have solved the problem. I don't think I uninstalled the original. I think I used Control Panel > Programs ... > Repair : Intel PROset/Wireless WiFi Software.

HOWEVER:
(1) I'm able to get onto the Internet; no problem.
(2) But I get "Network Adapter Not Found" on the system tray icon for Intel MyWifi Technology and Profiles is grayed out.
(3) And Intel Connection Utility gives an address for the adapter.

(2) has been happening for maybe 8 years with no apparent problem

So don't count on flawless performance by doing the Control Panel Repair, but it's absolutely worth a try. And try to accept all the apparently-false error messages you get.

My version is 14.2.
