Hi I am building my first custom liquid cooling loop and I am trying to mount my reservoir (xspc photon 270) to my case (corsair 900d). I tried drilling holes but I am not the most constructive. I didn't succeed. Shortly after I started my drill bit broke in half. Any suggestions on alternate mounting methods or suggestions on how to drill a good hole into a steel case?

Thanks any help is appreciated.

A thicker drill-bit will probably help with it snapping in half.
As for mounting the reservoir to the holes you drill, what I did was go down to the hardware store and pick up some short screws and nuts. Bring the mounting bracket so your sure that the screws will fit through it. From there, drill holes, put the screws through and use the nuts to clamp it to the case. If your drill bit is way too massive and the nut would pass through the hole, you will also need to pick up some washers.

Thank you for the suggestion it really helped. The way the xspc photon 270 mounting bracket is design it is unlikely I will be able to use a nut but I will definitely by some washers. I am also going to purchase either a titanium drill bit or cobalt drill bit, I will ask the person at the store which is better for penetrating steel. Is drilling holes in a case a popular method to mount a tube reservoir? Do some people use zip ties or velcrow?

You have the nut on the other side of the panel, its there so the screw cant leave the hole as I doubt you will get lucky enough for it to thread properly.
Whether drilling holes is necessary or not is entirely down to how you want to set up your loop, one option I can see with the 900D is that you could use the ventilation grill near the graphics cards or the 2nd PSU mount in lieu of drilling your own holes, but whether that will work well with your loop is another matter.
Zip ties if anything would require two holes to work. Velcro is somewhat common, though I would only use it for keeping something in place on a horizontal plane. I wouldn't feel safe using velcro to hold up a pump and reservoir full of water.

Thank you for the response. I have all ready thought about mounting it to the grill of the 900d but the graphics card is so large the reservoir will not fit. I will most likely end up drilling holes. Are there any precautions to take while drilling holes in a pc case? This will be my first time modding a pc case even a little bit haha its probably not even considered a mod to drill just a hole in the case. Should I cover the surface I am drilling with tape or anything like that?

Having no hardware in the case, especially static sensitive components like the motherboard would be a good idea, though I have drilled through my case with it all in there before.

I didnt, but its probably a smart idea
Something to catch all the metal filings would be a good idea, double sided tape would be perfect actually.

Oh. I drilled with everything in there but I was careful so that metal shavings wouldn't fly everywhere. I am sure some metal or steel shavings did get on my motherboard though. Does this mean my motherboard is ruined? I will be blowing compressed air to make sure all metal and steel shavings get out of my case before turning anything on. My res is successfully mounted thanks to your help. I really appreciate it. I have one more question. I need a g1/4 plug for my res, xspc photon 270 and I am thinking about gettings this.

Would it work as a plug so liquid does not come out of the res? It won't be on top of the res it will be on bottom so that worries me a bit more, liquid will be directly against it. Any g1/4 plugs you would recommend? Color or looks don't really matter because it won't be noticeable.

I have that exact fitting in my loop, it works fine as a plug.
If you dont have a killcoil yet, this silver bullet plug might be worth getting.

I am not worried about getting an anti biocide or anti corrosive. I am buying a stock fluid from koolance. koolance liq-705 clear. It has no color additives and it has an anti corrosive and anti biocide. I ended up getting this for a plug. I like the looks more and it performs the same.

The other one had more of a diamond shape this one is round.
