What would this be like as a Next-Gen Console Alternative? (£475 Gaming PC)

Hi guys.

Its my Birthday in the next 50 days and all I've been asked since Christmas has passed is "what do you want for your Birthday?"

At first, I really wanted one of the new "Next-Gen" Consoles (PS4/XBOne). However, upon further inspection i found out that these new consoles were REALLY expensive in the UK, especially when bundled with things like Xbox Live or PSPlus and a couple of games.

I heard that PC gaming was the way forward, so I put together this build in the hope that it will be as good (if not better) than one of the consoles:
http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/user/harryburke360/saved/3kto

At time of posting, this build came to £470.76/$780. It includes added extras such as mouse, keyboard and XB360 controller for any games. It also includes Win7 64-bit.

IMO this build is very good value for money and should beat the XBone and PS4, but I wanted a few knowledgable people to give me their opinions on this build.

Also, this is my first EVER PC build, so any comments on whether or not it will be difficult to build will be much appreciated.

I wil be looking at any alternatives that people list (Max price £475/$790). I cannot go over this as family have all told me how much they're giving me and I don't want to ask for any more. *This price MUST include Windows OS, Mouse, Keyboard (already have monitor)*

A smaller hd,but you could always add one later and 500gb should be enough for now.
A better gpu which is what counts when it comes to gaming.
A better cpu too.
With this motherboard you could try overclocking if you were up to it.You should get a better cooler by that time.
No xbox controller, try to play with mouse and keyboard and get one later when you've got the money again.
Look for yourself if the mouse and keyboard are what you want, you could look up some reviews for them.

I was looking to get the next gpu in,but think that you would loose to much elsewhere,
http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/part/msi-video-card-r7260x2gd5oc
the hd 7790 isn't that much worse, this one is just better at some games (a few) and it has 2gb of vram.

A guide about how to build your pc,it includes a video,
http://uk.hardware.info/reviews/2591/build-your-own-pc-2011-edition
the only difference will be placing the cpu cooler. In te next link there are two video's for that,

Thanks for the quick replies and thanks for the build Vic 40. Gonna leave the thread up for a little while as there's bound to be another guy with his/her input, and as I'm sure you can understand, I'd like a few options.
Few questions though.
I picked a 2gb gpu. What makes the 1gb gpu better?
Also, is there really too much difference in the CPUs?
Also, any guides on what games some games would run like would be much appreciated.

You're right, others have their opinion and can make other builds that suit your needs better.

With gpu's it's first about the "P" in there first which is the graphics processor,my choice is the far better one. That your pick has 2gb's of memory is really nice but doesn't contribute enough to even get close to the performance of the hd 7790.
That's why i showed the r7 260x at the end it' has the same or better performance as the hd 7790,but has also 2gb's of vram which might help with the latest games and wasn't that much more expensive. If you could find the extra ten pounds get this one.

Yes there is,what core is used, performance in some games (some games are mostly about the gpu,but others depend also on the performance of the cpu). and upgrade path. With the am3+ socket you might switch to a FX 8320 for instance in the future, maybe second hand.
I don't know if they keep this socket so maybe even a newer type of cpu might be supported, but like i said i don't know.

That's hard to say, just look up reviews about the graphic cards and realize with those reviews that they probably use a monster cpu like the i7 3930K which will give better results in a lot of games,at least compared to a fx 4300.

Like the next about gpu's,
http://uk.hardware.info/reviews/4889/amd-radeon-r7-260x-r9-270x-and-r9-280x-review-new-name-better-performance
the r7 260x is in there and the hd 7790 is in there too. Also the gtx 650 which is a better gpu than the gt 640 you picked.

Look at the next review about cpu's,
http://uk.hardware.info/reviews/4437/intel-core-i7-4770k--core-i5-4670k--core-i5-4430-review-haswell-test
and see how cpu's affect games,so look at both games at the highest setting picked here.

Looking at where we are now i would go for w8,it's less expensive than w8.1 and you get the option to upgrade to 8.1 anyway via windows update.
Yes w7 is also good, but i would pick the newer version.I think it just works smoother in the end, even if you have to get used to it.

I made one change,i chose for 4gb of ram instead of 8gb,

also put the r7 260X in btw,so two changes.

You could add another set of this ram later on when you would have the money.
Having 2gb's of ram on the gpu will take a little load of the normal ram,i've seen that in my own system,so i think you possibly could do with 4gb's of ram to begin with.
Maybe others disagree so look for reactions if you need to.

In the end it's up to you and with the 7790 you would already have a very good card compared to the gt 640 you chose.
And you can choose w7 if you like that better.

That last build looks amazing for the price. Will probably go for that and use win8 as soon everything will be using it. 2 final (very noob) questions, however:
1) will the psu cable reach from my plug, which is about 1.5m from my desk. Then, will the mouse and keyboard reach the same distance again to the top of my desk (which is where the plug is more or less)?
2) how do I connect to the internet with this? (Virgin WiFi hub is in another room, so linking it straight into that via Ethernet is a no-go)

It normally is the better card yes.I looked and found the next two which are probably within your budget,
http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/part/sapphire-video-card-112001620g
http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/part/xfx-video-card-fx785acnjc
the first one has 1gb of vram, the second one 2gb.
Looking at the price the first one is tempting,i just have a hard time figuring out wether the 1gb of vram extra is that much of a difference at normal 1080p screens.I know with bf4 they recommend 3gb's of vram, but that's probably a lot, most newer middle range cards have 2gb.
I've read that more can come in handy when trying to use aa and af settings.
In the end it's your choice, read some reviews about the r7 260X=google and look at the performance difference yourself. Most of the time the minimum fps is about the same or differs just a few fps=about 2 or 3.
