Hard lock ups since Windows 8.1 update

So ever since I updated from Windows 7 to Windows 8.1 (as a gift), I've been getting somewhat frequent lock ups. Sometimes I can go a few days without getting one, with the most frequent being an hour apart. It also seems mostly random, with the only common occurrence being when I load a BF4 map or when I alt tab out of a game (both have happened twice so far).

What happens though is my screen will freeze at whatever I was doing last, my mouse and keyboard become unresponsive, my HDD light goes solid, but my case fans/lights keep going. Also whats weird is that my power button also becomes unresponsive, forcing me to reboot via psu or unplugging it.

This was basically a clean install (I assume, had to reinstall all my games/programs), only preserving pictures and documents from before the update.

Even though the computer is kind of old (4-5 years) it runs smoothly except for these freezes. My temperatures for my GPU/CPU never exceed 50-60C, and all my drivers are up to date.

Just some side notes:

-This isn't entirely a "new" problem. I've had these kinds of crashes in the past with Windows 7, though it was on very rare occasions, something like once every 4 months or something (if that) if I had to guess. Since updating to Windows 8.1, the frequency of the crashes is way higher (few times a week).

-Recently replaced my PSU due to my old one failing little over a month ago. Don't believe the crashes are related to that simply because it ran flawlessly all of December with Windows 7 before upgrading to Windows 8.1 a week ago.

-Ruled out my HDD (I think anyway). I ran WinDlg 124, Western Digitals diagnostic for their HDDs and passed. Also ran CHKDSK as well with 0 bad sectors too. Open to trying another program if those are believed to not be reliable.

Thanks in advance for any asssitance

It's usually possible to rollback the system firmware, but it's very rarely ever necessary. The latest update on Gigabyte's webpage for that motherboard is revision F4 which improves DRAM compatibility. Lockups are characteristic of DRAM instability, so it may be related. It's good practice to keep firmware updated anyway.

It seems to me like Windows 8 is not the culprit. It's possible that whatever was causing the instability before has accelerated. Please post a full rundown of your system including any overclocking or other tweaks you may have performed.

Specs are as follows:

Intel i5 760 @2.80Ghz, 2794Mhz
Radeon 5770 HD
G.SKILL Value Series 8GB (2 x 4GB)
PC Power and Cooling 750W Mark III Silencer 750W
Gigabyte GA-H55M-S2
500GB WD HDD
Logitech G710 Keyboard
Logitech G700s Mouse
Windows 8.1 64bit

@Tradesman1, not sure about the BIOs update. I was told my drivers were all updated with the Windows 8.1 installation. Checked my GPU drivers to verify, which appears to be true, at least for that. Not sure how to update the BIOS though.

I've also done zero tweaking myself.

Checked my BIOs version in msinfo32 and says,

BIOS Version/Date Award Software International, Inc. F3 7/6/2010

Well I decided to try and replicate the crash by playing a few matches of BF4 and unfortunately had another crash, so the BIOS update didn't fix it.

I noticed my HDD light wasn't on this time when it crashed, so I'm starting to wonder if its the motherboard. Or could it be the HDD? Again, had no bad sectors from WinDlg or CHKDSK but that seems to have been the issue for some people when I was browsing the net.

So far though playing BF4 for a while seems to eventually lead to a crash so maybe even the CPU or GPU? Seems like it could be many things, though its weird how the crashes just became a normal thing after updating to Windows 8.1. Could this be a PSU problem? Mine is brand new, but that's the only hardware I've changed recently, though it seemingly worked fine with Windows 7. Anyway you can test a PSU other than swapping them out? (Other one is dead ofc)

On a side note, I'm open to upgrading parts (half the reason I snagged the PSU). Mostly wanted to figure out this problem first so I could figure out what I can keep. Again PSU is brand new but I guess its not impossible to be the culprit, also was going to keep the case and HDD unless its bad.

I welcome any and all input on this matter. Thanks again

After browsing the net and messing around with a few things, I discovered my PSU fan hasn't been working. I have no idea how long its been this way, possibly ever since I got it a month ago. The PSU comes with the option of a Normal and Silent model; Normal leaving the fan to run at almost all times, while on Silent, it comes on at 50% load. Its currently set to Normal and it doesn't come on during any games I've played so far. Not sure if I have to play them for an extended time or not for the fan to come on in either Normal or Silent.

If the fan is bad, I'm under the assumption Windows 8.1 is more demanding on hardware, leading them to pull more energy from the PSU, resulting in the PSU overheating? Or something to that degree?

Windows 8 is actually less demanding, but the PSU will degrade faster if it is not cooled. It could just have been a matter of time

My last post can be ignored mostly. After looking into it more, I realized that the diagram in the PSU manual was misleading (or I'm just an idiot)and in fact the Silent mode was on which is why the fan wasn't running. I just set it to Normal and the fan is now spinning.

The fan doesn't come on until it reaches 50% load under Silent. Is it possible for the lock ups to occur from not being cooled being under 50% load? In either event, I'm going to see how it works with the fan going and post back later. Assuming I get another lock up, I'm open to other suggestions.
